Moving Advice

We’ve prepared a brief guideline of advice for the moving process...

4 weeks prior to your moving day

Obtain removal quotes, and check availability for the date your looking to move
Start de-cluttering- get rid of items you don’t really require anymore i.e. give unwanted items to your local charity shop or hold a car boot sale
Calculate how many boxes you’ll need/ order packing materials- unless the removal company can arrange that for you

2 weeks before your moving day

Start to pack away non essential items- labelling the boxes clearly and indicate where they should be placed in your new home
Pack any hazardous materials separately i.e. bleaches, aerosols etc
You’ll need to notify your Post Office to re-direct any mail
Inform DVLA of your new address, it is an offence if you don’t and you could face a fine
Ensure family and friends know the address of your new home
Find out the best gas & electric deals for your new home (the postcode/ location can affect your bills)

One week before your moving day

Confirm arrangements with your removal company
If you have children or any pets, you may want to consider asking a family member/ friend to look after them on your moving day

The night before your moving day

Empty your fridge freezer in preparation to defrost it
Disconnect your washing machine and drain down
Pack important documents such as birth, marriage certificates together and keep them safe
Relax and get a good night’s sleep!

It’s moving day!

Remember, you may need to notify the following people/ organisations of your new home:

Doctors and Dentists (if moving out of the local catchment area)
Schools
Insurance companies
Bank/ Building Society
TV licensing
Telephone/ broadband supplier/ mobile phone supplier
Local Council (for council tax reasons, you may be aware it’s calculated on a daily basis, therefore you may be entitled to a refund)
